Rangla Punjab: A Colorful Journey into Rural Indian Cuisine

Designer Ketan Jawdekar Brings Punjab's Vibrant Culture to Life in a Unique Restaurant Design

The inspiration for Rangla Punjab, which translates to 'colorful Punjab', comes directly from the rural areas of Punjab, a state in India known for its love for colors. This affection for vibrant hues is evident in their attire, accessories, and decorations. Jawdekar's design is an attempt to infuse contemporary designs with the essence of Punjab's colorful lifestyle.

Rangla Punjab is not just a restaurant; it's an experience. Located on a rooftop in a commercial premises, the restaurant offers a feel of rural Punjab while guests dine and enjoy North Indian Punjabi Cuisine. The design features sustainable and local materials, including local stone Kudappah and brick pavers for the flooring. The walls are kept exposed without paint, and features are created using earthen pots, old RCC galley, kite thread rolls, and old cassettes.

One of the unique features of the restaurant is a truck used as a design element in the open area, complete with a staircase leading to the upper level. Lifting the truck to the terrace level, about 24 meters above the ground, was a significant challenge that was overcome with the help of a crane. The restaurant also features windows adorned with colorful glass bangles, creating interesting patterns as daylight filters through.

The restaurant, split into two levels, covers a total area of 800 square meters. It includes a formal indoor section with a bar and open pantry for desserts, an open terrace with informal seating, and a private section for about thirty people. The design of Rangla Punjab was realized over eight months, from April to December 2016.

Jawdekar's design for Rangla Punjab has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. It is a testament to the extraordinary excellence of Rangla Punjab and its significant impact on the world with its desirable characteristics.
